Spain: Final arguments in Princess Cristina’s fraud trial
MADRID – Closing arguments have started in the tax-fraud trial of Spain’s Princess Cristina, her husband and 15 others.
Prosecutors are seeking a 19-year jail sentence for Cristina’s husband Inaki Urdangarin and the lawyer for an anti-corruption group asked that Cristina be jailed for eight years.
The charges relate to an alleged scheme that embezzled millions from public contracts for conferences and sporting events.
The closing arguments began Friday and are expected to end Tuesday. A panel of judges could take weeks or months to issue verdicts.
A prosecutor and a state attorney representing Spanish tax authorities have said charges against Cristina should be dropped because officials agreed she committed no crimes and should face at most an administrative fine for tax evasion.
