New commander nominated for Marine Corps in Pacific

HONOLULU – President Barack Obama is nominating a new leader for the Marine Corps in the Pacific.

Defence Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement Thursday Lt. Gen. David Berger has been appointed to succeed Lt. Gen. John Toolan as the commander of U.S. Marine Forces Pacific. The nomination will go to the U.S. Senate for a vote.

Toolan plans to retire after 40 years of service and two years as the leader of Pacific Marines.

Berger currently commands the I Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton in California. He commanded the 1st Marine Division in Afghanistan in 2012.

The Marine Forces Pacific commander leads more than 80,000 Marines and sailors in California, Hawaii, Guam and Japan. He also leads Marines rotating through Australia.
