Duo accused of killing man, 95, in home invasion is captured

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Two people suspected of killing a 95-year-old man and severely injuring his wife during a Massachusetts home invasion have been captured in Virginia.

The Northwestern district attorney’s office says 23-year-old Joshua Hart and 27-year-old Brittany Smith are being held without bail pending arraignment Tuesday in Virginia on fugitive-from-justice charges.

The Athol (ATH’-uhl), Massachusetts, residents are suspects in a home invasion last week in the adjacent town of Orange that left Thomas Harty dead and his 77-year-old wife, Joanna Fisher, in the hospital. The couple’s car was also stolen.

The suspects were caught Saturday in a rental truck outside a Wal-Mart in Rockbridge County, Virginia.

They face murder, attempted murder and other charges in Massachusetts. Authorities have not disclosed a motive.

It wasn’t immediately known if they have attorneys.
