Ex-Mexican police official convicted in reporter’s murder

MEXICO CITY – A court in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca has convicted a former municipal police commander in last year’s murder of a local journalist.
The Oaxaca State Attorney’s Office says in a statement that Jorge Armando Santiago Martinez was sentenced to 30 years in prison at the conclusion of a weeklong trial.
The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists applauded Friday’s verdict but is calling on Mexican authorities to find the crime’s mastermind.
The case involved the slaying on Jan. 21, 2016, of Marcos Hernandez Bautista, who was a reporter for the newspaper Noticias, Voz e Imagen de Oaxaca. He was shot outside a bar he owned in Jamiltepec township.
A statement Monday from the Committee to Protect Journalists says his colleagues reported Hernandez had received threats.
