Jamaica policeman suspended from duty fatally shot

KINGSTON, Jamaica – A police officer in Jamaica on suspension from duty has been shot to death.

Authorities said Tuesday that 28-year-old Andre Alder was killed in Negril by two men on a motorcycle. Police said Alder was working as a security guard when he was shot Monday night.

Alder was suspended earlier this year after he was charged with corruption.

Jamaica’s police department recently raised the threat level against officers to “extreme” amid an uptick in violence. The island of less than 3 million people had at least 1,192 slayings in 2015, a roughly 20 per cent increase from the previous year.
