Police: California driver swerves to save one, kills another

FARMERSVILLE, Calif. – Police in Central California say a driver’s split-second decision to avoid hitting a woman in the street ended in the death of a man on the sidewalk.

The accident happened Sunday in the small community of Farmersville, 50 miles southeast of Fresno.

Officers say that a man driving a car swerved to miss a woman crossing the street on foot. The driver lost control, travelling onto the sidewalk.

Police say the car hit the man walking there, then went through a wrought iron fence before striking a power pole.

They say the 37-year-old man died at the accident scene. His name was not released.

Police say the driver and the woman in the street were not injured.

Officers say both survivors provided statements and were released.

The investigation is ongoing.
