El Salvador marchers demand justice in archbishop’s killing

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Demonstrators in El Salvador are demanding justice in the 1980 killing of Roman Catholic Archbishop Oscar Romero, four days before his Oct. 14 canonization as a saint.

Romero was assassinated while celebrating Mass by a gunman hired by right-wing death squads. But only one former military officer has been prosecuted in the killing.

More than 100 people carrying placards with Romero’s picture and chanting “We demand justice!” marched through San Salvador on Wednesday to demand his killers be punished.

In 2017, a judge ordered the case reopened after a court overturned an amnesty law blocking investigation and punishment of crimes during the 1980-1992 civil war. But little headway has been made in pursuing prosecutions.

Former Maj. Roberto d’Aubuisson has been blamed for Romero’s killing, but he died in 1992.
