Chicago police: Gunshot wounds 12-year-old as 2019 begins

Chicago police say a 12-year-old boy who was wounded by gunfire as people were ringing in the new year was the first person shot in the city in 2019.

Police say the boy was looking out of a second-floor window in the city’s Englewood neighbourhood about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday when a bullet struck his left hand. He was treated at a hospital and released.

The Chicago Tribune report s that police say the shooting was Chicago’s first of 2019.

Chicago police released preliminary numbers Tuesday showing the number of homicides and the number of people shot in the city fell in 2018.
