Tropical Depression Karl forecast to strengthen in Atlantic

MIAMI – Tropical Depression Karl is expected to turn to the north and pass near Bermuda on Friday night.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the storm’s maximum sustained winds late Thursday are near 45 mph (75 kph). Strengthening is forecast during the next two days, and Karl could become a hurricane Saturday.

As of 11 p.m. EDT Thursday, Karl was centred about 370 miles (595 kilometres) south of Bermuda and moving northwest near 16 mph (26 kph).

Farther east, Tropical Storm Lisa is weakening. The storm’s maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 kph).

Lisa was centred about 820 miles (1,315 kilometres) west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and is moving northwest near 9 mph (15 kph).
