How major US stock indexes fared Wednesday

U.S. stocks plunged to their worst loss in eight months on Wednesday as technology companies continued to drop. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 831 points.

On Wednesday:

The S&P 500 index skidded 94.66 points, or 3.3 per cent, to 2,785.68.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 831.83 points, or 3.1 per cent, to 25,598.74.

The Nasdaq composite retreated 315.97 points, or 4.1 per cent, to 7,422.05.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller-company stocks fell 46.45 points, or 2.9 per cent, to 1,575.41.

For the week:

The S&P 500 is down 99.89 points, or 3.5 per cent.

The Dow is down 848.31 points, or 3.2 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 366.39 points, or 4.7 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is down 56.70 points, or 3.5 per cent.

For the year:

The S&P 500 is up 112.07 points, or 4.2 per cent.

The Dow is up 879.52 points, or 3.6 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 518.66 points, or 7.5 per cent.

The Russell 2000 is up 39.90 points, or 2.6 per cent.
