Armed robbery suspect shot, RCMP officer injured in Shuswap
CANOE – A suspect in an armed robbery of a gas station was shot and seriously wounded by police yesterday afternoon and the entire situation is being examined by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C.
Police can't speak about the situation once the investigations office becomes involved, but investigations spokesperson Kellie Kilpatrick says the incident occurred when the robbery was reported around 5 p.m. yesterday, July 3. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle which was located a short time later in Canoe, just outside of Salmon Arm. Officers set up a perimeter and deployed a police service dog and handler to establish a track, Kilpatrick said.
"During the search, an officer came into contact with the affected person," Kilpatrick said. "The affected person was shot and sustained serious gunshot injuries. An officer was also injured during the confrontation. Both were transported to hospital for medical treatment."
No more information is expected at this time. Investigators were deployed to the area to determine what happened, as is standard procedure. Police will continue investigation of the crime while the independent investigators probe how RCMP handled the situation.
