KELOWNA – A popular Kelowna park has been shut down after a cougar was sighted earlier today, July 15.

Bertram Creek Regional will be closed until further notice, says a release from the Central Okanagan Regional District.

The release does not say who spotted the big cat but Kelowna RCMP and parks staff helped clear the beach area and get people out of the park early Wednesday afternoon. Residents are advised to stay out of the 18-hectare public park at the end of Lakeshore Road until further notice.

“There have not been any reported incidents as a result of the cougar sighting in the park,” regional district spokesman Bruce Smith says. “Parks staff and conservation officers will monitor the situation and the park will reopen when it is once again safe.”
