14 killed in clash over land in central Mali, police say

BAMAKO, Mali – A police official says 14 people have been killed in a clash over land in central Mali.

Moussa Ag Infahi, the police director-general, said Sunday that the fighting between residents of two villages in Djenne, in the Mopti region, occurred Saturday. He did not provide details on how the 14 were killed, though he noted the death toll was provisional and could change.

It is the beginning of the planting season in the area, a period when land conflict is common.

Central Mali has also been the scene of attacks by Islamic extremists, including one last month that killed five Togolese peacekeepers.

The Mopti region is known to be a stronghold for the Macina Liberation Front, a militant group that has claimed responsibility for several attacks on the army.
