Open house scheduled for Cemeteries Master Plan consultation

The City of Penticton will be developing a master plan to identify community demand for local cemeteries, and the public is invited to an open house to provide input on current and future facilities.

“Penticton’s cemetery system is reaching an important threshold, and it is incumbent upon the City to plan for the future and properly honour the final resting places of loved ones,” said Acting Mayor Garry Litke. “The master plan project is an opportunity to ensure that the cemeteries will meet the needs of residents throughout the next 25 to 50 years.”

Municipally owned and operated, Fairview and Lakeview Cemeteries are the only lands designated within the City of Penticton providing active burial space to the community. The existing in-ground burial inventory is projected to meet local demand for the next five years, while columbarium facilities at Lakeview are projected to satisfy much of the demand for those choosing cremation for many years to come.

The City of Penticton has commissioned consulting and landscape architect firm Lees and Associates to prepare a Cemeteries Master Plan to guide development, use and provision of a full range of cemetery services in a fiscal and environmentally sustainable manner over the next 25 years. The master plan process will consist of demand/needs analysis, a business plan and design of future land development.

An open house is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery Columbarium Gardens, 775 Lower Bench Rd, Penticton. Participants can discuss the proposed master plan for Fairview and Lakeview, review conceptual plans and provide feedback.
