Blue Jays’ Guerrero goes deep twice for his first multi-homer game

SAN FRANCISCO – Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his first major league home run on Tuesday night, then added a second five innings later for the first multi-homer game of his career.

The Blue Jays third baseman sent a 3-2 fastball from San Francisco opener Nick Vincent over the centre-field wall in the first inning, then tagged Giants reliever Reyes Moronta with a three-run shot to centre in the sixth on a first-pitch change-up.

Guerrero, in his 14th major league game since he was called up from triple-A Buffalo on April 26, gave the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead with his first homer, a solo shot which travelled an estimated 438 feet and had an exit velocity of 111.3 miles per hour.

His second was hit even harder (113.7 mph) and went further — an estimated 451 feet, the longest homer hit by a Blue Jay this season — to put Toronto up 7-2. The Jays won 7-3.

The homers made Guerrero the youngest player in franchise history to go deep in a major league game. Two-sport star Danny Ainge was the previous youngest Blue Jay to homer, doing so on June 2, 1979 at 20 years, 77 days old. Guerrero is younger by 18 days.

Guerrero was 3 for 4 Tuesday with a walk and four runs batted in, raising his batting average to .235.

The son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero entered the day batting .191 with one RBI. The family already had long-ball history at Oracle Park — the elder Guerrero won the 2007 Home Run Derby at the waterfront stadium.
