Skaha Bluffs to see increased RCMP and volunteer patrols

PENTICTON – It’s going to be a lot tougher for thieves to vandalize vacationer's vehicles thanks to local RCMP and volunteer initiatives at Skaha Bluffs.

Penticton RCMP and Community Policing volunteers were up at the Skaha Bluffs parking lot today, August 7, conducting a patrol and placing auto crime prevention notices on vehicles in the lot.

Climbers Access Society of B.C. has complained about number of thefts from vehicles at the Skaha Bluffs parking lot, suggesting it was negatively impacting tourism.

“We’re also consulting with climbers and B.C. Parks in an attempt to find a solution together to the thefts up here,” RCMP Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says. "We’ve heard the concerns expressed here at the bluffs. We’ll be making regular patrols and educating people as to how they can protect themselves.”

Community policing volunteer Nick Merluk says they were busy today placing check lists on vehicles in the parking lot.

“We’ve saved people a lot of money by reminding them of expired license plates, and reminding them to hide their valuables," Merluk says.

The checklists left on parking lot vehicles note such things as:
– anti-theft devices
– whether belongings are in plain sight
– if doors, windows or sunroofs were open
– expired permits

“We’re going to be conducting regular patrols of the bluffs," Merluk says.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
