Fairbanks man sentenced to 12 years for attempted murder

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A 27-year-old Fairbanks man who fired a bullet into the chest of a man he attempted to rob has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Justin Cavanaugh was sentenced Tuesday.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Cavanaugh in March pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree murder. A co-conspirator, 46-year-old Deborah Annick Carroll, pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to commit robbery. She was sentenced to four years in prison.

Prosecutors say Carroll contacted the victim, a friend, in October 2015 and asked to borrow money. The man picked her up and Carroll had him park near a shipping container. Cavanaugh was hiding nearby.

Cavanaugh banged on the man’s window. When the man opened the door, Cavanaugh shot him. Cavanaugh fired another shot as the man ran off.

The shooting victim survived.
