Lakeith Stanfield: An actor at home in the surreal

NEW YORK – The weirder it gets, the more Lakeith Stanfield looks right at home.

It got plenty bizarre in Jordan Peele’s “Get Out,” where Stanfield played the bodysnatched character who urgently utters the movie’s title. On Donald Glover’s “Atlanta,” surrealism is a guiding ethos, especially for Stanfield’s cosmically lackadaisical pot-smoking philosopher Darius.

Maybe topping them all is Boots Riley’s new film “Sorry to Bother You,” a comic but caustic social satire starring Stanfield as a telemarketer whose swift rise introduces him to a darkly dystopian world.

Since his feature-film debut in 2013’s “Short Term 12,” the 26-year-old Stanfield has become one of the most arresting, unpredictable, and in-demand actors in Hollywood. He has disarmingly laid-back, unflappable presence, like his antennae is tuned to a different frequency than the rest of us.
