Municipality without mayor or residents will not have regional district vote
INVERMERE, B.C. – Jumbo Glacier Resort municipality will not have a voting seat on the Regional District of East Kootenay in 2017.
The B.C. government says Jumbo must have properties with a minimum of $30-million in assessed value before it qualifies for a regional district vote.
The decision pleases Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft, who doubts Jumbo will ever have properties that reach the assessment minimum.
But he also says more must be done to prevent the development of the Jumbo Glacier Resort.
Jumbo, located 55-kilometres west of Invermere, has no residents and no appointed mayor or council.
The provincial government created the Jumbo resort municipality in 2012 as supporters pressed for a $450-million, year-round ski resort at the foot of Jumbo Mountain in southeastern B.C. (CFSM)
