Panama: 2 Colombian drug suspects killed in border firefight

PANAMA CITY – Panamanian authorities say two suspected Colombian drug traffickers were killed and two more wounded in a shootout with border agents.

The National Frontier Service says the gunfight took place Wednesday in the eastern province of Darien, which borders Colombia.

It says a group ignored a police order to stop and shooting broke out.

Agents seized sacks containing an unspecified amount of cocaine and marijuana.

The service said Thursday in a statement that a fifth suspect was detained nearby carrying $15,000 in cash.

Panamanian authorities say the jungle border region with Colombia is a corridor for illicit transit of drugs, people and weapons.
