Newfoundland and Labrador recreational cod fishery expanded as stocks improve
ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Newfoundland and Labrador’s recreational cod fishery is being extended by two weeks to 46 days this year as stocks improve.
The federal government announced the expansion today after recent reports that Northern cod numbers — though still in the critical zone — are increasing.
A moratorium on large-scale commercial fishing enforced since 1992 remains in place.
Scientists tracking stocks off Newfoundland said last year it will likely be another decade or so before the ban can be lifted.
The recreational fishery allows individuals a daily catch of up to five fish or 15 per boat from July 16 to Aug. 7, and from Sept. 24 to Oct. 2.
The fishery will be open every weekend through July and August, including Canada Day and Labour Day.
The expanded season also applies to Quebec’s Lower North Shore, and to tour boat operators who can apply for a licence requiring catch reports.
