Sutherland to star in ABC thriller, part of new season

NEW YORK – Kiefer Sutherland will play a low-level Cabinet member who suddenly becomes president on a new ABC drama this fall, one of nine new series the network will launch next season.

ABC’s schedule, which will be presented to advertisers on Tuesday, will also feature a new drama from the prolific creator Shonda Rhimes and a comedy where Minnie Driver plays a mom fighting on behalf of a special-needs child.

It’s the first schedule to be offered by new ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey, who replaced Paul Lee as the network tries to improve sagging ratings.

While Sutherland’s new series, “Designated Survivor,” is a thriller, presumably the fictional president will face less action than Jack Bauer, his character in Fox’s “24.”
