Tournament top-seed Eugenie Bouchard eliminated from National Bank Cup

QUEBEC – Eugenie Bouchard was eliminated from the National Bank Cup on Thursday night, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Russia’s Alla Kudryavtseva in the second round.

Bouchard, the tournament’s top seed, won only one break point in six tries against the 162nd ranked player in the world.

The 22-year-old also saved just 3-of-8 break points on the campus of Laval University.

Kudryavtseva was efficient on her first serves, winning 81 per cent of the points and broke the Westmount, Que., native twice in the first set.

Bouchard’s game didn’t improve in the second set as she struggled with her service game. Bouchard was able to get close by breaking Kudryavtseva to make it 5-3 but then failed to record a point while on serve in the next game, handing the victory to the Russian.

Montreal’s Francoise Abanda also lost in her second round match to American Jessica Pegula 7-6(2), 7-5.

In other matches on Thursday, Alison Van Uytvanck of Germany defeated Russia’s Barbara Stefkova 6-4, 6-3 and Oceane Dodin of France got past Sachia Vickery of the U.S., 6-4, 6-4.
