Accused PQ election-night shooter, Bain, arrives in court with injuries

MONTREAL – The accused gunman from the Parti Quebecois election-night party showed up in court today with a pair of bloody wounds on his head.

Richard Henry Bain arrived in the Montreal courthouse with a pair of fresh scrapes atop his bald scalp — one the size of a loonie, the other as big as a nickel.

He told his lawyer, loud enough for the courtroom to hear, that he had been “pushed” by a guard while in custody.

His lawyer will request an investigation into what happened.

Bain’s next court date is Dec. 7.

He faces 16 charges, including first-degree murder; three counts of attempted murder; arson; and a number of weapons charges stemming from the Sept. 4 incident where two people were shot and one was killed.

Friends of the victim, stage technician Denis Blanchette, were sitting in front of the courtroom today and did not say a word during the brief proceedings.

Bain was appearing for a discovery hearing, where evidence against him was provided to his lawyer. The evidence was translated into English, as he requested.

The evidence to be used against Bain will include the audio recording of an interview he gave a Quebec radio network last month, where he shared his political opinions such as his belief that Montreal should be an independent country.
