VANCOUVER – Vancouver’s strong start to the new Major League Soccer season hit a hurdle on Wednesday as the Whitecaps were held to a 2-2 home draw by Columbus.
Octavio Rivero scored his MLS-leading fifth goal of the season for Vancouver, which had won its previous four games.
Kei Kamara scored twice for Columbus, with the second putting the Crew ahead 2-1 in the 50th minute.
Vancouver responded by bringing on speedy Gambian Kekuta Manneh, and he set up the equalizing goal, netted by Darren Mattocks in his first start of the season.
Mattocks nearly won it for Vancouver moments later, but his shot smashed against the post.
