Kidnapping suspect remains barricaded in Whitby, Ont., auto repair shop

WHITBY, Ont. – There are indications that a lengthy standoff in Whitby, Ont., that began with an alleged attempted kidnapping on Monday night may have ended.

A man has been barricaded inside an auto repair shop for more than 24 hours following the alleged abduction of a city solicitor in nearby Oshawa.

The suspect has been identified in several media reports as former Oshawa city councillor Robert Lutczyk and the solicitor as David Potts.

Police and Oshawa Mayor John Henry have said the two incidents are related.

Henry said Potts was abducted from his home following a council meeting, but managed to escape unharmed and return home.

Several police vehicles have reportedly left the scene, but it’s unclear if this means a breakthrough in the standoff or is part of a police shift change. (CFRB,CP24)
