Fire destroys large meat production plant in northern Spain
MADRID – Authorities say an investigation has been launched into the causes of a fire that has destroyed a large meat production plant in northern Spain.
Milagros Marcos, agriculture councillor for the region of Castilla-Leon, says the government will also set up a committee to find a means to rebuild the Embutidos Rodriguez factory in Soto de la Vega as rapidly as possible.
No one was injured when fire ripped through the building Sunday, but up to 400 workers have lost their jobs until the facility — worth some 120 million euros ($134 million) a year to the region’s economy — is rebuilt, Marcos said.
A fire in November 2014 gutted the vast Campofrio meat production plant in Burgos where 1,000 employees had worked, causing precautionary evacuation of parts of the city.
