Member of Cuban parliament dies during committee session

HAVANA – Cuban authorities are reporting that a member of parliament has died during a committee session.

Government-run website Cubadebate says Raul Acuna Benitez died Wednesday afternoon despite efforts to revive him. It did not specify a cause of death or give his age.

Acuna Benitez represented the municipality of San Jose de las Lajas in Mayabeque province. Cubadebate says he was a history teacher and had also been a union leader, a Communist Party delegate and a worker at a local aquafarming company.

On the day he died, he was participating in parliamentary committee meetings that have been taking place this week at a Havana convention centre.
