Jailed Kurdish leader urges Turkey to resume peace talks
ISTANBUL – Turkey’s state-run news agency says the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party has renewed a call for Turkey’s government to resume talks with Kurdish militants aimed at ending the long-running conflict that has cost thousands of lives.
Anadolu said Abdullah Ocalan’s message was relayed Monday by his brother Mehmet Ocalan, who was allowed to visit the PKK leader at his island prison south of Istanbul the day before the Islamic holiday Eid al-Adha.
He says in the message that the Kurdish issue could be solved in six months if the government engaged in talks again and that everyone wants the conflict to end.
Hundreds of security personnel and thousands of PKK militants have been killed since hostilities resumed last summer following a 2 1/2-year cease-fire.
