Report: Boy, 12, ignited paper in fire that killed siblings

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A report from a New York fire department says a 12-year-old boy set paper on fire in his home this month, igniting a blaze that killed his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister.

The Syracuse Fire Department released the report of the Sept. 1 fire following a Freedom of Information request from The Post-Standard of Syracuse (http://bit.ly/2cvYLmg ).

The report says the boy used a lighter to ignite paper. The flames spread to nearby fabric and then to the house itself.

The boy hasn’t been publicly identified. Officials have not suggested that he intended to hurt anyone.

Vinroy Baddal Jr. and Chyna Baddal died. His parents, grandmother and three children, including himself, survived.

A family court judge will determine the 12-year-old’s fate. He’s charged in Family Court with arson and second-degree manslaughter.
