Inmates start mutiny and escape from Brazilian prison
SAO PAULO – Officials in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo say they’ve quelled a prison riot in which scores of inmates escaped.
The prison agency says no one was hurt during the mutiny in Jardinopolis, about 210 miles (340 kilometres) north of Sao Paulo city.
Officials didn’t say how many prisoners escaped Thursday, but said all had been recaptured and sent to another prison. The Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper quoted police as saying at least 80 had been recaptured, leaving open the possibility more were still at large.
TV Globo showed images of dozens of half-naked inmates with their hands behind their backs kneeling in front of policemen in the penitentiary.
Prison officials say the riot started during a routine search.
