Guatemalan couple extradited to face drug charges in US

GUATEMALA CITY – Guatemala’s prison agency says authorities have extradited a Guatemalan married couple wanted on drug trafficking charges in the United States.

The Guatemalan Penitentiary System said Wednesday that retired military officer Marlon Monroy Meono and his wife, Cynthia Janeth Cardona, were flown to Miami to face charges in U.S. federal court.

A Guatemalan court allowed the extradition to go forward and the couple did not oppose it. Monroy was arrested in April and Cardona in December.

Interior Minister Francisco Rivas has also alleged that Monroy was hired to kill top prosecutor Thelma Aldana by a group being targeted in one of the country’s sprawling corruption investigations.
