Canadians face off in NCAA women’s soccer tournament thriller in West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Canadians Kadeisha Buchanan, Ashley Lawrence, Carla Portillo and Amandine Pierre-Louis all scored in a penalty shootout Sunday as the top-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers defeated No. 4 UCLA and fellow Canadian Jessie Fleming to advance to the quarter-finals of the NCAA women’s soccer tournament.

Fleming, a freshman from London, Ont., scored on an 89th-minute header to tie the third-round game at 1-1 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.

The game went to penalties after extra time. Fleming missed her spot kick as West Virginia won the shootout 4-2.

The Mountaineers will host No. 3 Duke, which beat Northwestern 1-0, next weekend.

Sunday’s win extended West Virginia’s program-record win streak to 15 games.
