
Falling tree branch kills Polish official in heavy storm
WARSAW, Poland – Polish officials say the deputy mayor of a town in central Poland was killed by a tree branch toppled by a heavy summer storm. The storm left 10 other people injured and damaged 300 buildings.
Police on Friday said Robert Makowski, deputy mayor of Wolomin, a town near Warsaw, died as a result of his injuries sustained late Thursday.
Pawel Fratczak, a spokesman for firefighters, said they responded more than 4,300 times as a result of the storms and that on Friday morning 74,000 households were without electricity.
Among the injured was a firefighter hurt while trying to secure a roof in northern Poland.
About a dozen fires also broke when the storm damaged power lines.
