Works by Borduas, Thomson, Carmichael at Joyner Waddingtons fall sale

TORONTO – Works by Paul-Emile Borduas, Tom Thomson and Group of Seven member Franklin Carmichael will go up for auction at the Joyner Waddingtons fall sale on Nov. 26 in Toronto.

Expected to draw between $150,000 and $200,000 is Borduas’s painting “Chatterie,” which had remained under the radar in a private collection for more than 50 years.

Two Carmichael works, “Autumn Landscape” and “Summer Landscape,” are projected to fetch $125,000 to $175,000.

A rare Thomson painting on glass has an auction estimate of $15,000 to $20,000. “River Scene” is believed to have been painted in the early 1900s while Thomson was a student at the Central Ontario School of Art and Industrial Design in Toronto.

And Toronto transit commuters may recognize Charles Pachter’s “Hockey Knight In Canada (Le Roi De L’Arene),” which has an estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.

The baked enamel work on steel was a prototype for Pachter’s hockey-themed installation in Toronto’s College Street subway station, which features eighteen hockey players from the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens.

“Hockey Knight In Canada” depicts one of the Canadiens’ players.
