Decorated National Guardsman dies after crash on NYC road

NEW YORK – A National Guard soldier decorated for bravery in Iraq has died from injuries suffered in a collision in New York City.

The New York Police Department says 33-year-old Marcus Brown was speeding when he lost control of his van on a Staten Island road and collided head-on with a city bus last Friday morning. Police say he died Saturday at a local hospital.

Brown’s two passengers and the bus driver suffered minor injuries.

The Daily News reports that the Brooklyn native served in the New York Army National Guard and received the Bronze Star for his actions in Iraq in 2008 after an improvised explosive device blew up his vehicle, killing his commanding officer and the vehicle’s driver.
