Regina Symphony to get new music director, currently with Vancouver orchestra

REGINA – An associate conductor with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has been hired to take the reigns of the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

Current musical director Victor Sawa is retiring after the 2015-2016 season and will then be replaced by Gordon Gerrard.

Gerrard, who was born in Brandon, Man., has been with the VSO for three seasons.

“There’s lots of exciting things happening here in this community. I think it’s a great time for growth and expansion, and it’s a wonderful group of musicians,” said Gerrard.

During the search for a new director, Gerrard conducted the orchestra twice.

During his 20 years at the RSO, Sawa put his focus on attracting new audiences to the symphony with concerts featuring the music of Oscar-winning movies and outdoor shows.

“I am optimistic that my successor will take RSO to an imaginative and energetic future,” said Sawa.
