State moves closer to banning smoking at beaches, parks
TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey is moving closer to banning most smoking at public beaches and parks.
The Legislature approved a bill on Thursday. It now heads to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy for consideration.
Like previous versions of the bill that have failed, the measure doesn’t specify who would be responsible for enforcing it: lifeguards, police or someone else.
The bill allows for designated smoking areas. Smokers also would be allowed to light up in parking lots.
Fines would start at $250 for a first offence and go up to $1,000 for a third offence.
