UPDATE: Fatal collision between train and vehicle near Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – A collision between a car and a train west of Kamloops this morning has left one person dead.

RCMP say a vehicle drove around active railway crossing gates around 9:20 a.m., March 28, at Pat Road and was hit by a westbound CP train about 13 kilometres east of the city.

The driver and sole occupant of the Hyundai Elantra, a man in his 50s, was killed.

A witness has told police the vehicle stopped in front of the crossing initially, and when the train got close, the driver moved onto the tracks and stopped, according to a RCMP media release.

Kamloops Fire Rescue Platoon Capt. Jeff Bell says his crews responded to the scene after receiving a call from the B.C. Ambulance Service.

Bell says the vehicle had been pushed about 100 meters down the track by the train.
