Man falls to death rappelling in Grand Teton National Park
JACKSON, Wyo. – A man is dead after falling about 300 feet (91 metres) while rappelling a popular rock climbing route in Grand Teton National Park.
The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports the man, whose name has not been released, fell Sunday on the Guide’s Wall, a feature on Storm Point that looms over Jenny Lake north of Teewinot Mountain. His climbing partner had to remain on the wall overnight until she could be rescued Monday morning.
Rangers learned of the accident late Sunday night when a hiker saw a flashing light and heard the man’s climbing partner calling for help.
Park spokeswoman Denise Germann says the two were out-of-state visitors who were capable climbers with appropriate gear.
Rangers are investigating the condition and position of the climbers’ gear and other factors that might have contributed to the fall.
