Aftershock injures dozens of quake survivors in Pakistan

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan – A 4.4 magnitude aftershock injured dozens of people in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. It comes two days after a powerful earthquake there killed 37 people and injured hundreds.

Thursday’s aftershock damaged more homes, even as hundreds of quake survivors said they were still waiting for government aid.

People have been sleeping outdoors for two nights, fearing another temblor would send their homes crashing down on top of them.

The hardest hit area, as was the case in Tuesday’s 5.8 magnitude earthquake, was the district of Mirpur in Kashmir. Thousands of people were affected.

The aftershock’s epicenter hit a sparsely inhabited area of neighbouring Punjab province. The nearest city, Jehlum, wasn’t damaged.

Pakistan is prone to violent seismic upheavals. A magnitude 7.6 quake in 2005 killed thousands of people in Pakistan and Kashmir.
