FLOWOOD, Miss. (AP) — Two rookie police officers in Mississippi’s capital have been placed on leave after they were caught with a small amount of marijuana.
The Flowood Police Department said someone called officers Friday about 5:45 p.m. after seeing two people smoking marijuana in Nature Trail Park, WLBT-TV reported. Police soon arrested Darius Short, 30, and Kenya McCarty, 22. The two off-duty officers are recent graduates of the Jackson Police Department.
Officers also seized a gun that was on a nearby table where the officers were sitting. A second gun was also recovered along with open containers and “marijuana paraphernalia.”
Short and McCarty each face charges of possession of marijuana and open container violation. It was unknown if either has an attorney who could speak on their behalf.
Short and McCarty have been placed on leave, with pay, pending an investigation, authorities said.
