NEW YORK – The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has unveiled a plan to improve service and clean up New York City’s subway system.
MTA officials announced Monday that the plan includes improving tracks and signals and adding a night cleaning staff. Interim MTA Director Ronnie Hakim says the blueprint to improve services includes reorganizing the agency’s leadership structure.
Rapid response teams tasked with fixing track and other equipment problems will be formed, while the delivery of 300 new subway cars is being moved up.
The agency also plans to add emergency medical technicians to aid sick passengers and cut down on train delays.
Hakim says the first section targeted for improvement is the Eighth Avenue corridor from 125th Street in Harlem to Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan.
The overhaul comes after a series of major service disruptions over the past month.
