Regimental funeral planned for RCMP officer who died in crash on Vancouver Island

LANGFORD, B.C. – The RCMP have announced plans for a regimental funeral service for an officer who died earlier this week in a crash in Langford, B.C.

The funeral for Const. Sarah Beckett will be held Tuesday at the Q Centre, an arena in Victoria.

The Capital Regional District Traffic Safety Commission said Beckett's body was scheduled to be returned to Vancouver Island on Friday afternoon.

An official who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of the police investigation says Beckett's body was flown to Vernon on Thursday for medical analysis.

Beckett, an 11-year member of the RCMP, was killed early Tuesday when a pickup truck collided with her cruiser.

The 32-year-old officer is survived by her husband and two young children.

RCMP Cpl. Janelle Shoihet said Mounties are conducting a criminal investigation, and Saanich police have confirmed they are looking into the circumstances of the collision that killed Beckett.

The Mounties say the other driver involved in the crash wasn't seriously injured.

He was released from custody on Wednesday without being charged.
