UN calls Yemen fighters to abide by cease fire
The U.N. Security Council is calling on all parties in Yemen civil war to halt all military activity and abide by the terms of a Cessation of Hostilities agreed upon in April.
The council said in statement issued Thursday that the humanitarian situation will continue to deteriorate in the absence of a durable peace agreement and urged all parties to resume talks with Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed.
Houthi rebels and forces allied with ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh seized the capital Sanaa in September 2014, forcing the internationally recognized government to flee the country. A Saudi-led coalition has conducted an extensive air campaign against the Houthis since March 2015, pushing them out of southern Yemen, but failing to dislodge them from Sanaa.
