Brazilian movie ‘The Second Mother’ opens the 21st Sarajevo Film Festival
SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina – The 21th Sarajevo Film Festival is kicking off with a screening of Brazilian director Anna Muylaert’s “The Second Mother” — a Sundance Festival award winner.
Over nine days some 100,000 expected guests will watch 259 movies from 57 countries.
The festival was born in a sandbag-protected basement during the Bosnian war when a few young people organized a screening of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” during which the viewers wondered whether the sound of the shooting came from the loudspeakers or from the battles outside the basement.
Over the years the festival grew into one of the most important in the region, visited by Hollywood stars. This year Benicio del Toro will present Fernando Leon de Aranoa’s “A Perfect Day” in which he appears.
