Pakistan army says Indian troops kill 2 civilians, wounds 8

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s military says Indian troops have killed two civilians and wounded eight others in what it called an incident of “unprovoked firing” in a remote village bordering Indian-controlled Kashmir, while a third villager died in hospital of gunshot wounds sustained in a similar incident the previous day.

The military said Pakistan also returned fire during the incident Wednesday.

Tension in the disputed Himalayan region has increased since last month, when India said it had carried out “surgical strikes” against militants in the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir. Pakistan dismissed the claim as baseless and called on India to produce evidence to back up its claims.

Kashmir is divided between Pakistan and India and is claimed by both in its entirety.
