Poll: More Danes want a referendum on EU membership

COPENHAGEN – As Britain gets ready for its referendum on the European Union, an opinion poll in Denmark suggests a growing number of Danes also want to vote on whether to quit the EU.

The Epinion survey published Thursday by Danish broadcaster DR said 42 per cent of the 1,215 people interviewed want a vote on Denmark’s EU membership. That was up from 37 per cent in a previous poll in February.

The May 17-24 survey said 44 per cent support continued EU membership while 37 per cent would quit the 28-country bloc. The rest were undecided. No margin of error was given.

Denmark joined the bloc in 1973 with Britain and Ireland, but has opted out of parts of EU treaties for fear of losing sovereignty.

The centre-right government has no plans for a referendum.
