Kamloops man who murdered father ordered held at psychiatric hospital

PORT COQUITLAM, B.C. – A Kamloops, B.C., man who told a psychiatrist the devil ordered him to murder his father has been ordered to remain in custody at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port Coquitlam for at least the next year.

The ruling involves 19-year-old Joshua Steel, who was found not criminally responsible for the killing because of a mental disorder.

He used a fireplace tool to club his 65-year-old father, Phil, in the family home in September of last year.

This week, Steel made his first appearance before the BC Review Board, which determines custody issues in such cases.

Review Board Chair Bernd Walter says the board decided Steel should remain at the psychiatric hospital until his next hearing, which would normally be in a year. (CHNL)
