Saskatoon Remai Modern Art Gallery delayed and overbudget, says city director

SASKATOON – A Saskatoon official says the Remai Modern Art Gallery of Saskatchewan is delayed and overbudget.

Mike Gutek, Saskatoon’s director of major projects, says little tweaks and corrections to the original blueprints are needed to meet code and sometimes health and safety standards.

He says these changes cost money.

It means the opening of the gallery will now be early 2017, instead of September 2016.

The blueprint corrections and clarifications have pushed costs over budget by between $3.5 million to $4.5 million, which the city is responsible for.

Gutek says the city will try to save money by reviewing the minimum expenditure required for furniture, fixtures and equipment that would be needed to open the gallery in 2017.
